POSTCARDS FROM A PANDEMIC 1
by EVA EVERYTHING
This series of images juxtaposes everyday life and a developing pandemic. This is a documentation of that juxtaposition. It starts on December 30, 2019, the day that “private” group postings on Chinese social media broke the news of a new virus. It’s also the day we began our first ever, long term escape from the cold Canadian winter to a beautiful, warm place we had come to know and love, Cozumel.
I’ve taken many pictures over the decades but this year, of all years, I didn’t. I chose to experience more and record less. The pictures I did take are a documentation of my work in progress, personal photos, and interesting stuff I saw while doing everyday things and I happened to have a camera with me. Most were never meant to be seen by others.
Soon after arriving, when I read a brief blurb about a few cases of a new viral pneumonia in China, I thought, “That’s a nothing burger,” and dismissed it, but because I’m me, I had to follow the story and learn as much as I could. It crept in on tiny, little feet and then quickly had a serious impact on every single aspect of our lives.
From now on, we will refer to anything before December 30, 2019 as the PreCOVID-19 era. This is the story of how a virus changed everything.
