POSTCARDS FROM A PANDEMIC 3
These are the postcards I’m sending in the second year of the SARS CoV-2 pandemic. You may not find my life to be particularly interesting but that’s the point. In the throes of the pandemic most of us aren’t leading exciting lives. This thing is bigger than me, bigger than all of us, and I’m pretty sure it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Leaving a legacy has never been my goal but the scope of the pandemic made it impossible for me not to chronicle it and juxtapose my real life in a way I’d never do in normal times. In my videos and music it was always a persona, but this is the real me. The pandemic has changed our lives in every way and we carry on as best we can. How do we cope and preserve our sanity? What becomes important and what is irrelevant now? It’s a life or death situation for some. A guy I knew, whose life had become unbearable when the pandemic shut down his livelihood, ended it, leaving behind a loving wife and kids. Those of us who survive may well prefer to forget the pandemic once it fades into the background but in the future its impact on our society will be studied. While politics and the lifestyles of the sick and shameless will have been uploaded to the saturation point, the private lives of the media-silent (those who don’t spill their guts on social media) will remain hidden. My fondest wish is that in the future, this chronology of everyday life gives the curious a glimpse into these historic times. Not that we’ve ever learned anything from history, even as we write its pages.
